Flea Pest Control (BPCA/ RSPH Qualified)
Fleas are parasites that live of warm bloodied animals including humans, usually it is the pets and children that act as hosts. Fleas and their bites are a visible indication of requiring flea pest control. But they are only a small part of a large problem, as fleas only account for about 5% of the total flea population when you take into account their eggs, larvae and cocoons.
Treating your pets with flea treatment will not kill the other 95% of the flea population living in your house, however treating the whole house with a professional flea pest control service will kill 99.99% of flea infestations.
Moth & Fly and other insect Pest Control
Moths, flies, beetles, bugs and other insects can prove not only annoying but also extremely costly from the potential damage they can cause, we provide residual treatments that will fully eradicate your problem.
About Fleas, Fly Pest Control & Insect Pests:
Normally fleas are associated with cats and dogs, however, they can be found on all sorts of warm-blooded animals including rabbits, squirrels, rats, ferrets, mice, chickens and other birds, and, of course, humans.
Fleas feed on the blood of these animals and while they lay their eggs on them, the eggs are not sticky and will fall off usually somewhere in the vicinity, like a pets basket or onto carpet in the home.
There are many different types of flea, but the most common are the cat flea, the dog flea and the human flea. Fleas are small, dark-coloured insects with no wings and very narrow bodies that allow them to pass easily through the hairs or feathers of the host animal. They have developed very strong hind legs that enable the insect to jump a considerable distance in proportion to their size. Their bodies are also extremely hard and able to resist substantial pressure so are difficult to crush. This means that any animal scratching bites is unlikely to destroy the flea and so the irritation continues as the number of bites increases.
Fleas are not a major spreader of diseases, although they definitely can disseminate bacteria and were responsible for transmitting the bubonic plague from rats to humans. It’s their bites that are irritating and a cause of some distress to those suffering from them whether they are human or animal, sometimes for up to two weeks after the flea has fed on them.
For every flea seen around the home, there are many more in various stages of development and a household product available over the counter will not necessarily treat each of these stages.
The Flea is small at around 2mm long, reddish brown in colour and is flattened laterally, a feature which enables it to move easily among the hair of its host. The most distinctive features of the flea are the large jumping legs and the row of non-sensory spines on the front margin of the head and on the rear of the thoracic segment. These bristles or combs are a diagnostic feature of the Flea.
The eyes are apparent as are the antennae, and the mouthparts which are adapted for piercing and sucking, are typically seen projecting downwards from the head.
The complete lifecycle of the flea takes only four weeks in the summer months. Adult fleas feed on blood. Their bites can cause intense irritation around a central bright red spot. Different people react differently to a bite, both in terms of degree of reaction and time taken to react – hence the need for flea pest control and flea treatment services.
The most common species in the UK is the Cat Flea which bites humans. The Human Flea and the Bird Flea are next in magnitude. Dog fleas are less common, although other species may become briefly attached to dogs in the wait for a more favourable host.
A thorough inspection is carried out to identify the source and severity of the infestation, i.e. the host animal(s) these should be treated by a veterinarian. Then a residual insecticide should be sprayed in all areas frequented by the animal.
JG Environmental also provide heat treatments to eradicate all insect pests. Please call for more information.
