Ant Extermination

Ant Extermination is the most popular service used by pest control as ants nest in and outside peoples homes, plus they like the same foods as us. Your food cupboards are a picnic to these little guys.

Most people do not realise that because there are different types of ants, they require different Ant Extermination methods. If a professional Exterminator is not used to eradicate the problem then the chances are that the ants will keep coming back.

About Ants as Pests: Common Black Ant, Garden Ant – Lasius Niger

As with all social insects there are a number of different castes comprising a complicated community within the ants nest. The workers are the most common caste and the ones that are most likely to be seen by the Pest Controller. Males and Queens are produced at certain times of the year and these are the winged individuals, the so called flying ants, which are common on thundery summer days. The workers are about 2-5mm in length, almost always black or black/brown although the base of the antennae, the tarsi and the leg joints have yellowish colour. The presumptive queens and males are larger in body size 6.6-10mm and 3.5-4.7mm respectively, again prominently black but on emergence from the nest they have wings. The wings are lost by the female once mating has taken place and the males die shortly after mating.

There are a number of different ants found in the UK so the first thing to do when confronted with an ant infestation is to identify the species. Any of these varieties pose a risk of contamination to surfaces or food after ants have walked across dirt or unhygienic surfaces before invading your home. They are particularly adept at gaining access to even tightly sealed jars and so can be a real nuisance in the home. In addition to this, some of the tropical species will also bite.

The ants most often seen are the worker garden ants which are approximately 4mm long and black or dark brown in colour. During mating season you may see swarms of “flying ants” – these are the fertile males and immature queens which breed in flight.

Pharaoh’s ants are tropical, originating in warm humid climates, so in the UK, they set-up home in buildings that cater for their need for warmth and moisture. They are different from the garden ant being smaller, around 1.5-2mm in length, and a yellowish-brown colour, sometimes with a reddish-brown abdomen.

In addition to the Pharaoh’s ant, there are a number of other tropical species now seen in the UK. The Ghost ant is around 1.5-2mm in length and has a pale, almost translucent body and legs with a dark head. Crazy ants are so-called because of their erratic and rapid behaviour, unlike other ants that normally move in methodical trails. These ants are black and approximately 2.5-3mm in length with very long legs and longer antennae than most ants. Roger’s ants differ from other ants in that they forage for live prey, especially silverfish or the larvae of little flies. They are a reddish-brown in colour, with male worker ants around 2-3mm long and winged females approximately 3.5mm in length. The Argentine ant is small and slender, around 3mm long and dark honey-coloured. A particularly aggressive and invasive species of ant, the Argentine ant is especially difficult to eradicate.

It is essential to identify which species you are dealing with before any treatment is carried out as tropical ants are particularly difficult to eradicate because of the nature of their colonies, having multiple queens and an ability to form new colonies once disturbed and scattered. For this reason, a do-it-yourself treatment will probably aggravate the situation and increase the level of infestation.

There are also a number of different types of insecticides and baits available that work in different ways and a professional will not only be able to identify the ants correctly, but also advise on the best method of treatment for the variety and the level of infestation. Those products available to the average consumer may alleviate a small problem temporarily, but as ant nests can be very large, may not eradicate them totally.

A residual insecticide is used in and around the nest it can also be used around strategic points of the property to prevent foraging workers gaining access. Good hygiene also helps to reduce the attraction for the ants.
